Question: you are a passenger on flight where terrorists have slit the throat of a stewardess and are taking over the controls of the aircraft*. Do you prefer him to be armed with: a) a cell phone b) a .32 calibre pistol c) a copy of the Guardian Vote/comment here *Please note this has "statistically" only happened three times in the past three years. The dark side of the US patent laws- A number of companies, including one called PanIP, are using threatening tactics and very (overly) broad patents to force small businesses to buy a licence for such things as using an e-commerce website! T.he W.ar A.gainst T.error - What a great acronym for Bush or Blair! The war against Iraq has started, under a very appropriate quote of the day:"Fleener's Law: 80% of conspiracy theories come true in time.". In spite of at least 90% of the world not really agreeing, the UK and the USA are determined to kick some ass. See ananova for latest. Update:- Prezdisent B'Liar seems to be having a rather rough time at the moment.. Seems there aren't any weapons of mass distruction to be found. So he lied to or misled the house. Tut tut. Patent fraud warnings: World International Patent Organisation warning page provides details and links to scams and frauds involving your IP! The space shuttle Columbia has exploded with the loss of all hands. Further details. It now seems likely that ultra-hot gas, rather than plasma, penetrated the skin of the shuttle, causing the structural aluminium to fail. RFID: The New Big Brother? An interesting discussion regarding how we might wind up being trackable everywhere, all the time. Radio Frequency IDentity tags are the future, and will further flood the foothills, meaning the plebs running the tills are fired and the computer checks the RFID tags and debits your bank account automatically. If you don't turn off the tags, though, you can be tracked (almost) anywhere! Deadly virus built from DNA The headline here for a long while was "Man creates life! (In a science lab)". A team put together a strain of a virus from basic DNA building blocks they ordered from a lab supply place! Actually, a much better link is this site run by a Russian company. The Japanese railway design is very cool! Here is an article about using giant airships to fight forest fires-they can carry a lot more water! Alas, the predicted world shortage of helium may put the brakes on the idea, rather than the fires. (It seems the biggest player in the field has gone bankrupt, too! Farewell Cargolifter!)Can you imagine using hydrogen airship? If you have a brilliant idea, please do feel free to protect it. Use Secrecy and your brain. Also, remember that it probably isn't new! You could also publish it online, to prevent anyone from patenting it, including you. Find out a bit about patents. Click for a few alarming thoughts on Copyright. If you want to see if you have discovered something new, try a search via the links page. Britannica is a good place to start, then follow it up with a patent search on the WIPO server.
